A candidate forum, courtesy of William Carey University

I received a call today inviting me to a candidate forum hosted by the Carey Scholars at William Carey University.  This is a great opportunity for the candidates to get their message out, and to communicate the importance of this election to the populace.  Media coverage is anticipated.

An interesting discussion on the MyHattiesburg.com forums

Questions are asked and answered in the forum with an eye to what the different candidates will do if elected.  My name on the forum is Scipio.  I recommend reading all of the posts- there is a great deal of information contained therein, particularly regarding the nature of courts in general.

The 13th Circuit Court District Election appeal

Justice Chandler has ordered that the expedited appeal briefs are due today at 5:00 p.m.  We will know shortly what the Supreme Court thinks about the write-in election in the 13th Circuit Court District.  The question becomes whether this will affect the 10th Chancery Court District.

I spoke with S. Wayne Easterling, Esq., who filed the suit on behalf of the clerks.  He stated that he was unsure whether the arguments that they were making to stop the 13th Circuit Court District election would bar our write-in here.  If the lawsuit is successful and the election is barred on the basis of some constitutional violation, that would tend to invalidate the entire write-in process.

But claim and issue preclusion would not otherwise attach to the 10th Chancery Court District election, because no clerks from our district have joined in that lawsuit.  The DOJ may still invalidate the election under the Voting Rights Act, but I don't know enough about that to speak intelligently.

Delbert Hosemann releases officially unofficial list of persons coerced into submitting qualifying affidavit

There are nine declared candidates in the race.  Of course, this is basically a meaningless list; no one can be required to submit a judicial qualifying affidavit.  But at least it's something.

Radio killed the radio star

Spent an enjoyable hour and a half with Farley Shaw and the crew at Supertalk in Hattiesburg, out on Old Highway 11.  We recorded a 60 second spot; the first half tells the voters about me and the chancery court; the second half tells voters how they can write in my name.  We injected  a bit of humor into a mnemonic for the spelling of Ignatiev; I can only hope that part of the ad works well.

We're out of push cards already, and working hard to get a second batch out.  I want to thank all our friends in the western half of Marion County (West Marion's homecoming) and the Live at 5 Crew in Downtown Hattiesburg.  Let's continue to get the message of accessibility and good judgment out to the voters of Forrest, Perry, Lamar, Marion, and Pearl River Counties.
